About:
Moroccan I is part of a series of layered papercuts exploring the movement of architectural forms and ideas between cultures. The work draws on the intricate geometry of Islamic architecture and the way these visual languages travelled, were absorbed and reinterpreted within European architecture.

The series considers how encounters with Byzantine and Islamic buildings introduced European travellers and artisans to unfamiliar patterns, structures and decorative traditions, elements of which would later appear in churches, cathedrals and other historic buildings.

Through ten delicate layers of paper, forms traditionally expressed in stone are transformed through depth, shadow and light. As the light changes, the relief reveals different elements of the pattern, exploring how architectural ideas can acquire new meanings as they move between places, cultures and materials.
