About:
Moroccan II is part of a series of layered papercuts exploring the movement of architectural forms and ideas between cultures. The work draws on the intricate geometric patterns of Islamic architecture and their subsequent influence on European architectural and decorative traditions.

The series considers how travel and cultural exchange exposed European artisans to unfamiliar patterns, structures and approaches to ornament, with these ideas subsequently adapted and reinterpreted within churches, cathedrals and other historic buildings.

Through ten delicate layers of paper, forms traditionally expressed in stone are transformed through depth, shadow and light. As the light changes, different elements of the pattern emerge, reflecting the way architectural ideas themselves are transformed as they move between places, cultures and materials.
